Doctor Who
Biography:
The First Doctor is the initial incarnation of the Doctor, the protagonist of the long-running BBC science fiction series, Doctor Who. Originally portrayed by William Hartnell from 1963 to 1966, the First Doctor is characterized as an elderly, sometimes crotchety, but ultimately wise and compassionate Time Lord from the planet Gallifrey.
He embarked on his travels through time and space in a stolen TARDIS, a time machine disguised as a blue police box, accompanied by his granddaughter Susan Foreman. His early adventures often saw him acting as a mentor to his human companions, initially teaching them about history and science through firsthand experience.
Hartnell's portrayal established many of the Doctor's defining traits, including his eccentric behavior, quick wit, and strong moral code. The character was eventually regenerated due to Hartnell's declining health, marking the first time the show explored the concept of regeneration as a method of replacing the lead actor.
Multiple actors have portrayed the First Doctor in subsequent episodes, usually in multi-Doctor stories, most notably Richard Hurndall in "The Five Doctors" and David Bradley in "The Day of the Doctor," "Twice Upon a Time," and "The Power of the Doctor". These performances offer different interpretations of the original character while staying true to the core essence of the First Doctor.
