The War Doctor, played by John Hurt, is a previously unknown incarnation of the Doctor from the BBC science fiction television series, Doctor Who.
He emerged as a direct consequence of the Time War, a devastating conflict between the Time Lords and the Daleks. The Eighth Doctor, faced with the war's increasing horrors, chose to regenerate into a warrior, renouncing the name "Doctor" as he believed he no longer deserved it.
This incarnation was created to perform actions the Doctor would normally deem unacceptable, specifically ending the Time War, even if it meant committing genocide. He carried the burden of this decision, which haunted his subsequent regenerations.
The War Doctor first appeared in the mini-episode "The Night of the Doctor" (2013) where the Eighth Doctor regenerates, but his full introduction was in the television special "The Day of the Doctor" (2013), celebrating the show's 50th anniversary. He is a vital and tragic figure in the Doctor's timeline.
