Biography:
The First Doctor, portrayed initially by William Hartnell, is the original incarnation of the Doctor in the BBC science fiction series Doctor Who. He first appeared in the inaugural episode, "An Unearthly Child," in 1963.
Initially presented as a somewhat grumpy and mysterious figure, the First Doctor possessed a sharp intellect and a profound sense of justice. He traveled through time and space in his TARDIS, initially with his granddaughter Susan Foreman and her teachers, Ian Chesterton and Barbara Wright. This crew were involuntary passengers, a plot point that softened the doctor's character.
Hartnell's portrayal established many of the Doctor's enduring characteristics, including his eccentric mannerisms, his love of gadgets, and his passionate defense of the innocent. However, this Doctor also lacked the nuanced morality of later incarnations.
Due to Hartnell's declining health, the character underwent the first regeneration in 1966, transitioning into the Second Doctor. The first doctor's final episode was "The Tenth Planet". This regeneration was described as a consequence of old age and exhaustion. Though he vanished from the original series for a time, later storylines would see this doctor return for multi-Doctor specials.
