The Fifth Doctor, portrayed by Peter Davison, is a reincarnation of the Time Lord known as the Doctor in the long-running British science fiction series, Doctor Who. He assumed the role in 1982 after his fourth incarnation sacrificed himself to stop the Master.
Visually, the Fifth Doctor is characterized by his youthful appearance and cricket-inspired attire: a cream-colored suit, a pair of trainers, and a sprig of celery pinned to his lapel. The celery, he claimed, could detect certain gases and would turn purple if he was in the vicinity of such a gas, which would then allow him to eat the celery as an antidote.
The Fifth Doctor's era is often described as a return to a more subtle and vulnerable portrayal of the character compared to his immediate predecessor. While still highly intelligent and capable, he was more prone to self-doubt and relied heavily on his companions, including Adric, Nyssa, Tegan, and later, Peri.
His era included classic storylines featuring iconic villains like the Cybermen and the Master, and concluded in 1984 with the serial "The Caves of Androzani," where he sacrificed himself to save Peri, triggering his regeneration into the Sixth Doctor.
