The First Doctor, portrayed initially by William Hartnell, was the original incarnation of the Doctor, the Time Lord protagonist of the BBC science fiction series Doctor Who. He travelled in a stolen time-and-space machine called the TARDIS, which resembled a police box.
Initially presented as a crotchety and mysterious figure, the First Doctor was fiercely protective of his granddaughter, Susan Foreman. He travelled with her and her teachers, Ian Chesterton and Barbara Wright, exploring various points in history and the future.
Over time, his personality softened, and he developed a grandfatherly affection for his companions. He championed good and opposed injustice, gradually evolving into the heroic figure that future Doctors would embody.
Due to Hartnell's declining health, the First Doctor underwent the first regeneration in the show's history. The Doctor was "renewed", becoming the Second Doctor, played by Patrick Troughton. The First Doctor's era is known for its historical adventures and the introduction of iconic villains like the Daleks.
