Biography:
The War Doctor, portrayed by John Hurt, is a unique incarnation of the Doctor from the BBC science fiction series Doctor Who. He exists outside the numbered sequence of regenerations due to his actions being deemed unworthy of the title "Doctor."
He emerged as a result of the Eighth Doctor (Paul McGann) regenerating after choosing to become a warrior to fight in the Time War against the Daleks. Faced with the potential annihilation of the universe, the Eighth Doctor drank an elixir that forced his regeneration into a battle-ready form, sacrificing his pacifist ideals.
The War Doctor fought in the Time War, committing atrocities he deeply regretted. Ultimately, he used the weapon known as "The Moment" to seemingly destroy both the Time Lords and the Daleks, ending the war. This act haunted him for the rest of his existence.
Forgotten by his subsequent incarnations until the events of "The Day of the Doctor," his memories were restored, allowing the Tenth (David Tennant) and Eleventh (Matt Smith) Doctors to revisit and ultimately alter the timeline, saving Gallifrey and redeeming the War Doctor's sacrifice.
