Biography:
The War Doctor, portrayed by John Hurt, is a unique incarnation of the Doctor in the BBC science fiction series Doctor Who. He emerged during the devastating Time War, a conflict so horrific that the Eighth Doctor (Paul McGann) deemed himself unable to participate, choosing instead to become a warrior. He was a product of his circumstances, a version of the Doctor who abandoned the name to do what he believed was necessary to end the war.
His existence was largely forgotten, hidden from the Doctor's personal timeline by his later selves, the Ninth, Tenth, and Eleventh Doctors, who considered his actions too shameful to acknowledge. He used weapons, made difficult choices, and ultimately used the Moment, a weapon of mass destruction, ostensibly ending the Time War by destroying both the Time Lords and the Daleks.
Though initially reviled by his future selves, the War Doctor was eventually understood and forgiven after the events of "The Day of the Doctor." He regenerated into the Ninth Doctor, carrying the weight of his actions, but ultimately ensuring the survival, albeit unknowingly at the time, of Gallifrey.
