James Buchanan "Bucky" Barnes, commonly known as Bucky, is a central character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. His first appearance was in Captain America: The First Avenger (2011). Prior to his transformation, Bucky was a close friend and comrade of Steve Rogers during World War II.

During a mission, Bucky seemingly fell to his death. However, he was recovered by Hydra, who brainwashed and transformed him into a formidable assassin known as the Winter Soldier. He was subjected to experiments, including enhancements that gave him superhuman strength and a metal arm. His designation as an asset to the Hydra organization was the Winter Soldier.

For decades, the Winter Soldier was deployed on covert missions, leaving a trail of destruction. Eventually, Captain America helped Bucky break free from his programming. Post-Hydra, Bucky grappled with his past, seeking redemption and struggling to control his triggers. His journey of recovery and integration back into society is a major theme in The Falcon and The Winter Soldier.
