James Buchanan "Bucky" Barnes, also known as the Winter Soldier, is a character appearing in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
He first appeared in the MCU as Bucky Barnes in the film Captain America: The First Avenger (2011), portrayed by Sebastian Stan. Initially, Barnes is depicted as Steve Rogers's childhood friend who enlists to fight in World War II.
Captured and experimented on by HYDRA, he is presumed dead after falling from a train. However, HYDRA retrieves and brainwashes him, turning him into a super-soldier assassin known as the Winter Soldier. The Winter Soldier is enhanced, possesses a cybernetic left arm, rides a motorcycle and is deployed on various clandestine missions for decades.
His identity is eventually uncovered, leading to a complex journey of recovery, redemption, and grappling with his past actions.
