Green Lantern is the name of many superheroes from DC Comics. The original Green Lantern, Alan Scott, first appeared in All-American Comics #16 in 1940. However, later versions are the most widely known.
These later Green Lanterns, such as Hal Jordan, John Stewart, Guy Gardner, and Kyle Rayner, are members of the Green Lantern Corps, an intergalactic police force. They are granted power rings by the Guardians of the Universe, granting them incredible abilities powered by willpower. These rings can create constructs of green energy and allow for flight, among other powers.
Each Green Lantern is assigned to a sector of space to protect, acting as guardians against various threats. Their power rings are charged by a lantern battery, which they recite an oath to while charging. The most common oath is: "In brightest day, in blackest night, No evil shall escape my sight. Let those who worship evil's might, Beware my power, Green Lantern's light!"
