Abin Sur was a member of the Green Lantern Corps from Sector 2814, the same sector as Earth. He was considered one of the Corps' bravest and most respected members. Born on the planet Ungara, he served the Guardians of the Universe for many years, protecting his sector from various threats.
His most significant contribution to Earth's history occurred during a fateful mission. While pursuing the fear entity Parallax, Abin Sur was mortally wounded when his spacecraft crash-landed in the Mojave Desert. Knowing he was dying, he used his power ring to search for a worthy successor, one who possessed the will and fearlessness necessary to wield the power of a Green Lantern.
The ring ultimately chose Hal Jordan, a test pilot, as Abin Sur's replacement. Abin Sur's death and the passing of his ring marked the beginning of Hal Jordan's career as Earth's first Green Lantern of Sector 2814 and fundamentally shaped the future of the Green Lantern Corps and the DC Universe. Abin Sur is also known as the brother-in-law of Sinestro.
