Green Lantern is the name of many superheroes appearing in DC Comics, each empowered by a power ring and membership in the intergalactic peacekeeping force known as the Green Lantern Corps. Each Green Lantern wears a ring granting them the power to manifest objects of green energy and fly. The first appearance of Green Lantern was in *All-American Comics* #16 (July 1940) featuring Alan Scott, however the most well known character goes by the name Hal Jordan.
Hal Jordan is perhaps the most famous Green Lantern, becoming a member of the Lantern Corps after being chosen by a dying alien. He is known for his bravery and sometimes reckless nature. He has appeared in the *Green Lantern* movie, portrayed by Ryan Reynolds.
Beyond Hal Jordan, many others have served as Green Lanterns, expanding the role of the Green Lantern Corps and solidifying the concept of a diverse group of protectors throughout the universe. Each member gains their abilities from a power ring and oath to uphold justice.
