Black Adam, also known as Dark Adam, first appeared in December 1945 in the comic book The Marvel Family #1 published by Fawcett Comics.
Teth-Adam, an ancient Egyptian, was chosen by the wizard Shazam to be his successor. Granted immense power by uttering the word "Shazam!", Teth-Adam was intended to become a champion of good. However, the power corrupted him, leading him to rule Egypt with an iron fist.
Shazam, regretting his choice, stripped Black Adam of his powers and imprisoned him for millennia. Upon his eventual release, Black Adam sought to reclaim his place as ruler and often clashed with heroes like Captain Marvel (Shazam) and Superman. He becomes more and more associated with anti-heroic stories where his ruthless methods clash with the heroic ideals of his contemporaries.
Black Adam's powers include super strength, flight, invulnerability, magical lightning manipulation, and wisdom, speed, and stamina enhanced by the gods.
