Following his escape, he usurped the throne of Kahndaq by force, and has become one of the most powerful enemies of Billy Batson, the superhero known as Shazam.

Black Adam, whose comic book first appearance was in Fawcett Comics' *The Marvel Family* #1 in December 1945, is a complex character within the DC universe.
Originally depicted as a corrupted predecessor to Captain Marvel (now Shazam), granted similar powers by the wizard Shazam, Black Adam was imprisoned for his misuse of those abilities. His powers include super strength, flight, and invulnerability.
Over time, Black Adam's portrayal has evolved. He is now often presented as an anti-hero, fiercely protective of his homeland, Kahndaq. He dispenses justice through his own ruthless methods, blurring the line between hero and villain, and presenting a UV Printed version of morality.
