Biography:
Zoom is the alias used by Hunter Zolomon, a character appearing in DC Comics. His first appearance was in The Flash (vol. 2) #197 (March 2003).
Zolomon was initially a police profiler who, after being injured in an attack by Gorilla Grodd, became obsessed with understanding the criminal mind. He sought help from the Flash (Wally West) to prevent future tragedies. When Wally refused to use his powers to alter the timeline and prevent Zolomon's paralysis, Hunter took matters into his own hands.
Believing he needed to become a better hero to truly help the Flash, Zolomon attempted to use the Cosmic Treadmill at the Flash Museum to gain speed powers. The resulting explosion didn't grant him super-speed in the traditional sense. Instead, it altered his personal timeline, allowing him to control the speed at which he exists in time, effectively granting him the appearance of super-speed. This manipulation of time allows him to move faster than the Flash and even phase through objects.
Zoom distinguishes himself from other speedsters, including the Reverse-Flash, by believing he is acting as a hero, albeit through extreme and morally questionable methods. He sees inflicting personal tragedies upon the Flash as a way to make him a better hero, leading to a constant clash of ideals and devastating consequences.
