Biography:
Jean-Paul Valley, also known as Azrael, assumes the mantle of Batman following Bruce Wayne's incapacitation at the hands of Bane during the "Knightfall" storyline in DC Comics.
First appearing as Batman in *Batman* #500 (1993), Valley is chosen by Wayne due to his fighting prowess and belief that he could continue protecting Gotham City.
However, Valley's mental instability, amplified by the "System" – a form of subliminal programming instilled in him by the Order of St. Dumas – leads him to adopt a more violent and extreme approach to crimefighting. He modifies the Batsuit into a heavily armored and weaponized version, becoming increasingly brutal and ineffective as a symbol of justice.
