Biography:
Azrael is the name adopted by several characters in DC Comics. However, the best known is Jean-Paul Valley. Genetically engineered and mentally conditioned by the Order of St. Dumas, he was created to be their enforcer.
He first appeared as Azrael in *Batman: Sword of Azrael* #1 (1992). Initially, he was presented as an ally to Batman, but the Order's programming eventually took over after Bruce Wayne was injured by Bane during the Knightfall story arc.
Valley replaced Bruce Wayne as Batman, adopting a more violent and brutal approach. He redesigned the Batman suit adding bladed gauntlets and body armor. After Bruce recovers, he eventually defeats Valley and reclaims his role.
After Knightfall, Valley attempts to redefine himself, attempting to atone for his past actions. He has been both an ally and adversary of Batman since.
