Azrael is a mantle assumed by several characters in the DC Comics universe, most notably Jean-Paul Valley. He's typically depicted as an anti-hero, operating in the shadows of Batman.
Jean-Paul Valley was genetically engineered and mentally conditioned by the Order of St. Dumas to be their enforcer, Azrael. He possesses enhanced strength, speed, and reflexes. The "System," a form of subliminal programming implanted by the Order, dictates his actions and can drive him to extremes.
Valley briefly replaced Bruce Wayne as Batman after Bane broke Batman's back. As Batman, Azrael became increasingly violent and unstable, redesigning the Batsuit with deadly weaponry. Ultimately, Bruce Wayne recovered and reclaimed the mantle, defeating Valley.
