Azrael is a DC Comics character, most notably known as Jean-Paul Valley, who first appeared in Batman: Sword of Azrael #1 (1992). He is a member of the Order of St. Dumas, a secret society created centuries ago.
Valley was genetically engineered and mentally programmed by the Order to be their enforcer, Azrael. Initially, he aids Batman but later replaces him, becoming a brutal and unstable version of the Dark Knight.
Ultimately, Batman defeats Valley, reclaiming the mantle. Azrael then embarks on a quest for redemption, attempting to use his skills for good. The character has undergone several iterations, sometimes as an ally, sometimes as an antagonist.
