Azrael is the name adopted by several characters in the DC Comics universe, most notably Jean-Paul Valley. He first appeared as Azrael in Batman: Sword of Azrael #1 (1992).
Jean-Paul Valley was genetically engineered and mentally conditioned by the Order of St. Dumas to be their enforcer, Azrael. He initially aided Batman after Bane broke his back, briefly taking on the mantle of Batman himself.
Valley's methods as Batman were far more brutal and violent than Bruce Wayne's, leading to conflict. Eventually, Batman recovered and defeated Valley, reclaiming his role as Gotham's protector.
Despite his past, Azrael has attempted to redeem himself, fighting crime and working alongside other heroes. The mantle of Azrael and its connection to the Order of St. Dumas have been passed to others in the DC Universe as well.
