Azrael, also known as Jean-Paul Valley, is a complex character in the DC Comics universe. He first appeared in *Batman: Sword of Azrael* #1 (1992).

Valley was genetically engineered and mentally programmed by the Order of St. Dumas to be their enforcer. This programming, known as "The System," grants him enhanced strength, speed, and combat skills, but also makes him susceptible to mental instability.

Initially, Valley served as a replacement Batman after Bruce Wayne was injured by Bane. However, his increasingly violent and erratic methods proved he was not a suitable replacement. After Batman's recovery, Valley fought against Batman and was eventually deprogrammed to a certain extent. He is most well known for his time briefly taking over the mantle as Batman after Bruce Wayne's injury.
