Azrael is the name held by several characters in the DC Comics universe, most notably Jean-Paul Valley. He is typically depicted as a vigilante and anti-hero, often associated with Batman and the Order of St. Dumas.

Jean-Paul Valley was genetically engineered and mentally programmed by the Order of St. Dumas to be their avenging angel, Azrael. He initially becomes a replacement for Batman after Bruce Wayne's back is broken by Bane. However, Valley's increasingly violent and unstable methods lead to a conflict with Batman upon his recovery.

Valley's Azrael dons a technologically advanced suit and exhibits enhanced strength and reflexes, but struggles with the Order's conditioning, leading to bouts of extreme aggression and distorted moral judgment. Although he eventually relinquishes the Batman mantle, he continues to operate as Azrael, seeking redemption and fighting against the influence of the Order of St. Dumas. He is usually portrayed with red and gold armor.

Other characters have also held the title of Azrael in DC Comics, each with their own ties to the Order of St. Dumas and varying degrees of heroism and villainy.
