Thanos is a fictional supervillain appearing in Marvel Comics. He was created by writer/artist Jim Starlin and debuted in The Invincible Iron Man #55 (February 1973).
Born on Titan, a moon of Saturn, Thanos is a mutant member of the race of Eternals. He possesses immense strength, durability, and energy projection capabilities. His ultimate goal is to bring balance to the universe as he sees it, which he believes requires wiping out half of all life.
Driven by a nihilistic philosophy influenced by Mistress Death, Thanos seeks the Infinity Stones, powerful artifacts that grant the wielder near-omnipotence. By collecting all six stones and placing them on the Infinity Gauntlet, he achieves his destructive ambitions, only to be thwarted by the combined efforts of Earth's heroes and cosmic entities.
He is often portrayed as a genocidal warlord and one of the most formidable adversaries in the Marvel Universe, leaving a trail of destruction and cosmic imbalance in his wake.
