Thanos, as portrayed in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) culminating in Avengers: Endgame, is a powerful Titanian warlord driven by a desire to bring balance to the universe. He believes overpopulation and resource depletion will inevitably lead to destruction.
His first appearance in the MCU was a cameo in The Avengers (2012) but his role became much larger as the franchise continued. In his quest, Thanos seeks the six Infinity Stones, artifacts of immense power. Gathering these stones allows him to wipe out half of all life in the universe with a snap of his fingers.
