Thanos, as portrayed in Marvel's Avengers: Endgame, is a genocidal warlord from the planet Titan. Driven by a Malthusian belief that finite resources inevitably lead to societal collapse, Thanos seeks to bring "balance" to the universe by eliminating half of all sentient life.
His plan culminates in a quest to collect all six Infinity Stones, artifacts of immense power that, when combined, grant the wielder near omnipotence. He succeeds in this goal in Avengers: Infinity War, enacting "the Snap" and wiping out half of all living beings.
In Endgame, the surviving Avengers confront him to undo his actions. While they are able to initially kill him after learning the location of his retirement planet, a second Thanos from an alternate timeline travels to their present to finish his mission.
This version of Thanos is ultimately defeated and erased from existence by Tony Stark, who uses the Infinity Stones against him in a self-sacrificing act. Thanos represents a nihilistic, albeit strategically calculating, threat motivated by a twisted sense of altruism.
