Shazam, originally known as Captain Marvel, is a superhero published by DC Comics. First appearing in Whiz Comics #2 (February 1940), the character's rights were later acquired by DC.
The modern iteration of Shazam gained significant attention following DC's relaunch event in 2011. A Comic-Con Exclusive figure offered at SDCC gave many an early look at the new costume design.
The character is typically depicted as a young boy named Billy Batson who, by speaking the magic word "Shazam!", transforms into a powerful adult superhero with abilities derived from ancient mythological figures. This version was shown at SDCC 2012.
