Shazam, formerly known as Captain Marvel, is a superhero appearing in DC Comics. He debuted as Shazam in Justice League Vol 2 #0 (2012) as part of DC's New 52 relaunch.
Billy Batson is a troubled foster youth who gains the power to transform into Shazam by speaking the wizard's name. He is granted incredible abilities derived from mythical figures: Solomon's wisdom, Hercules' strength, Atlas' stamina, Zeus' power, Achilles' courage, and Mercury's speed.
Initially portrayed as cynical and distrustful, Billy gradually learns the importance of family and responsibility as he embraces his role as Shazam. He is part of a foster family with other children who can also share his powers.
