Billy Batson, as presented in DC Comics' New 52 continuity, is a troubled teenager chosen by the wizard Shazam to be his champion.
Unlike previous iterations, this Billy is initially portrayed as more cynical and distrustful, a reflection of his difficult upbringing in foster care. He begins as selfish and unwilling to join his new foster siblings.
Upon speaking the wizard's name, "Shazam!", Billy is transformed into a powerful adult superhero, also called Shazam (formerly Captain Marvel). He gains superhuman strength, speed, flight, and the ability to project lightning.
The New 52 version of Shazam first appears in *Justice League* #7 (2012). The new origin story replaces the more traditional Golden Age portrayal of Billy Batson. He is forced to become a better person to obtain the abilities.
This Modern Age version of the character is more flawed than previous iterations, with character development tied to Billy learning the value of family and teamwork, leading to him embrace his role as a hero.
