Jason Voorhees is a central figure in the horror film franchise, Friday the 13th. While not the initial killer, he becomes the primary antagonist known for his brutal and seemingly unstoppable nature.
Jason first appears in Friday the 13th (1980), initially as a child who drowned at Camp Crystal Lake due to negligence by the camp counselors. While he makes a brief appearance at the end of the first film, it is his mother, Pamela Voorhees, who is the original killer.
From Friday the 13th Part 2 (1981) onward, Jason takes up the mantle of killer, seeking revenge for his mother's death and, subsequently, guarding Crystal Lake from intruders. He is often depicted wearing a hockey mask, though it only becomes part of his signature look in Friday the 13th Part III (1982). He is characterized by his large stature, immense strength, and near invulnerability.
Throughout the series, Jason's methods of killing are often graphic and inventive, contributing to the films' slasher horror reputation. The character has become a horror icon, synonymous with the slasher subgenre and featuring in numerous sequels, crossovers, and other media.
