Captain America is a superhero appearing in Marvel Comics. Created by Joe Simon and Jack Kirby, he first appeared in Captain America Comics #1 (March 1941) published by Timely Comics, a predecessor to Marvel Comics.
Born Steve Rogers, he was a frail young man deemed unfit for military service during World War II. He volunteered for a top-secret program, Project Rebirth, which transformed him into the peak of human perfection through the use of a special serum and "vita-rays."
Rogers emerged as Captain America, a super-soldier clad in a patriotic costume and wielding an indestructible shield made of vibranium. He fought against the Axis powers, becoming a symbol of American courage and freedom.
After being presumed dead for decades, he was discovered frozen in suspended animation. Revived in modern times, he joined the Avengers and continues to defend the world against threats.
