Biography:
Azrael is a DC Comics character whose mantle has been held by several individuals. The most well-known is Jean-Paul Valley, introduced in Batman: Sword of Azrael #1 (1992).
Valley was genetically engineered and mentally programmed by the Order of St. Dumas to be their warrior, Azrael, the Angel of Death. The Order intended for him to carry out their vengeful and extreme form of justice.
His training included hypnosis and conditioning, making him a formidable fighter, but also mentally unstable. He briefly replaced Bruce Wayne as Batman after the "Knightfall" storyline, adopting a more violent and brutal approach to crimefighting. Eventually, Batman returned, and Valley was forced to confront his programming and find his own path.
