Bane, portrayed by Tom Hardy, is a primary antagonist in Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight Rises (2012), the concluding film in The Dark Knight Trilogy. While the character's first appearance was in DC Comics in 1993, this portrayal is specifically based on a live action character.
Born and raised in the brutal Pena Duro prison, Bane endured unimaginable hardship and pain from a young age. He was conditioned to become an exceptionally strong and ruthless fighter, both physically and mentally. The film shows him using a mask which supplies him with a kind of pain killer.
In The Dark Knight Rises, Bane is driven by the goals of Ra's al Ghul from the previous Batman film to destroy Gotham City. He leads the League of Shadows in a terrorist campaign that plunges Gotham into chaos. Bane physically and strategically defeats Batman, taking control of the city and revealing its corruption to the world.
Ultimately, Bane's plans are thwarted, and his origins as a protector of Ra's al Ghul's daughter, Talia, are revealed. He is eventually killed during the battle to reclaim Gotham, marking the end of his reign of terror.
