Bane, as portrayed in Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight Rises, is a highly intelligent and physically imposing mercenary and revolutionary. He's a primary antagonist to Batman, orchestrating a complex plan to dismantle Gotham City.

Born and raised in the brutal Peña Duro prison in a fictional Latin American country, Bane endured harsh conditions and experimental treatments that left him in constant pain, requiring the use of a mask administering the analgesic gas to survive. He was trained by the League of Shadows, but was excommunicated by Ra's al Ghul.

Bane returns to Gotham years later, leading a terrorist campaign. He physically breaks Batman, symbolically and literally dismantling Gotham's institutions. He exposes the city's corruption, unleashes criminals, and instigates a populist uprising. Ultimately, his plans are thwarted by Batman with the help of Selina Kyle, revealing a deeper motive related to the League of Shadows.
