Bane, portrayed by Tom Hardy, is a major antagonist in Christopher Nolan's film, The Dark Knight Rises (2012), the final installment of The Dark Knight Trilogy.
Born and raised in the underground prison known as The Pit, Bane was shielded from its full horrors by a fellow inmate who would eventually become Ra's Al Ghul. He was excommunicated from the League of Shadows due to his brutality. He is physically imposing and relies heavily on a mask-like device that delivers a constant supply of analgesic gas, relieving pain from injuries sustained in The Pit.
Bane arrives in Gotham City to fulfill Ra's Al Ghul's mission of destroying the city. He orchestrates a sophisticated plan that includes bankrupting Bruce Wayne, releasing the inmates of Blackgate Penitentiary, and holding the city hostage with a stolen fusion reactor weaponized as a neutron bomb. His reign of terror is only ended with his death at the hands of Selina Kyle.
