Sméagol, better known as Gollum, is a central character in J.R.R. Tolkien's Middle-earth legendarium, specifically The Lord of the Rings. He is a Stoor Hobbit originally, who lived near the Gladden Fields.
His life took a tragic turn when he murdered his relative Déagol to obtain the One Ring. This act, combined with the Ring's corrupting influence, twisted Sméagol both physically and mentally over centuries. He became a wretched creature, renamed Gollum due to the gurgling sound he frequently made.
Gollum first appears in The Hobbit. He is encountered by Bilbo Baggins in the Misty Mountains after Bilbo finds the One Ring. The two engage in a riddle game, with Bilbo escaping thanks to his possession of the Ring.
Driven by his obsession with the Ring, Gollum relentlessly pursues it, playing a pivotal role in the events of The Lord of the Rings. Ultimately, his desire leads to the Ring's destruction in the fires of Mount Doom, albeit accidentally, and his own demise in the process.
