Gollum, a tragic figure from J.R.R. Tolkien's Middle-earth, first appears in *The Hobbit*. Originally a Stoor Hobbit named Sméagol, he was corrupted by the One Ring.
Driven by an insatiable desire for the Ring after murdering his cousin Déagol to obtain it, Sméagol retreated into the Misty Mountains. Over centuries, the Ring warped his mind and body, extending his life far beyond natural limits while shrinking and contorting him. He became known as Gollum, named for the gurgling sound he made.
Gollum's existence revolved entirely around possessing the Ring. He served as both a guide and a menace to Frodo Baggins and Samwise Gamgee in *The Lord of the Rings*, leading them towards Mordor while constantly plotting to steal back his "precious." His internal conflict between his former self and the Ring's influence shaped his actions, making him a complex character capable of both treachery and occasional, fleeting moments of compassion.
