Biography:

Gollum, originally known as Sméagol, is a creature from J.R.R. Tolkien's Middle Earth, most notably featured in *The Lord of the Rings*. He first appears in *The Hobbit*.

Sméagol was a Stoor Hobbit who lived with his extended family. He acquired the One Ring after murdering his cousin Déagol for it. The Ring's corrupting influence warped Sméagol both physically and mentally, extending his life far beyond its natural span and twisting him into the pitiable creature known as Gollum.

Driven mad by the Ring and banished from his community, Gollum hid in caves of the Misty Mountains for centuries, becoming increasingly obsessed with his "precious". He plays a pivotal role in the events of *The Lord of the Rings*, guiding Frodo Baggins and Samwise Gamgee to Mordor, while constantly plotting to reclaim the Ring for himself.
