Biography:
Gollum, formerly known as Sméagol, is a central character within the world of Middle Earth as depicted in the Lord of the Rings movies. His first chronological appearance is in The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey.
Sméagol was originally a Stoor Hobbit, a member of a riverside community. His life took a dramatic turn when he murdered his relative Déagol to claim the One Ring after it was found in the River Anduin.
The Ring's corrupting influence twisted Sméagol both physically and mentally over centuries. He retreated into the Misty Mountains, becoming a wretched creature obsessed with the Ring, which he calls "my precious." His body became gaunt and pale, and his personality fractured, leading to internal dialogues between Sméagol and his "Gollum" persona.
His pursuit of the Ring ultimately leads him into conflict with Bilbo Baggins, who finds the Ring in Gollum's cave. This encounter sets the stage for the events of the Lord of the Rings, where Gollum serves as a guide, and constant threat, to Frodo and Sam in their quest to destroy the Ring.
