Gollum, originally known as Sméagol, is a central character in the Lord of the Rings media franchise, existing within the realm of Middle Earth.
His first chronological appearance in the adaptations is debatable, though he has become a staple of live-action Lord of the Rings adaptations. Sméagol was once a Stoor Hobbit of the River-folk. On his birthday, he ventured to the Gladden Fields with his cousin Déagol, where Déagol discovered the One Ring.
Consumed by greed and an overwhelming desire, Sméagol murdered his cousin to claim the Ring for himself. The Ring's corrupting influence twisted Sméagol both physically and mentally over centuries. He was banished by his family and fled into the Misty Mountains.
Living in darkness and isolation, he became known as Gollum, named for the gurgling sounds he made. He is typically depicted as a gaunt, wretched creature, driven by an insatiable craving for the Ring, which he refers to as "my precious."
