Sméagol, also known as Gollum, is a character from J.R.R. Tolkien's Middle Earth saga. His first appearance occurs in *The Hobbit*.
Originally a Stoor Hobbit, Sméagol lived a relatively peaceful life with his extended family. His life dramatically changed when he acquired the One Ring after murdering his relative Déagol for it.
The Ring's corrupting influence twisted Sméagol both physically and mentally. He retreated into the Misty Mountains, where he lived in caves for centuries. Prolonged exposure to the Ring warped him into the creature known as Gollum. He is driven by a constant desire to possess the Ring and refers to it as "my precious".
Gollum serves as a tragic example of the Ring's power and the destructive nature of obsession. He is integral to the plot of *The Lord of the Rings*, both as a threat and as a guide.
