Sméagol, later known as Gollum, is a tragic character from J.R.R. Tolkien's Middle Earth legendarium.
Originally a Stoor Hobbit, Sméagol was corrupted by the One Ring after murdering his relative Déagol to obtain it. This event occurred after Déagol found the Ring in the Gladden Fields. The Ring's influence warped Sméagol physically and mentally over centuries, transforming him into the creature known as Gollum.
Gollum's first appearance is in *The Hobbit*, where he encounters Bilbo Baggins in the Misty Mountains. He loses the Ring to Bilbo, which sets the stage for the events of *The Lord of the Rings*.
Consumed by the Ring's power and driven by a burning desire to reclaim it, Gollum plays a pivotal role in *The Lord of the Rings* as both a guide and a treacherous antagonist to Frodo Baggins and Samwise Gamgee.
