Gollum, originally known as Sméagol, is a creature deeply corrupted by the One Ring in J.R.R. Tolkien's Middle-earth. A Stoor Hobbit by birth, Sméagol murdered his cousin Déagol to obtain the Ring after Déagol found it in the Gladden Fields.
The Ring's corrupting influence warped Sméagol physically and mentally over centuries. He retreated into the Misty Mountains, where he lived a solitary existence, consumed by his obsession with the "precious" Ring. This isolation and the Ring's power transformed him into the creature known as Gollum.
Gollum's first appearance is in *The Hobbit*, where he encounters Bilbo Baggins and loses the One Ring to him. This event sets the stage for Gollum's relentless pursuit of the Ring throughout *The Lord of the Rings*.
His personality is fractured, oscillating between the corrupted Gollum and remnants of the original Sméagol. He plays a crucial role, guiding Frodo Baggins and Samwise Gamgee through Mordor, though his ultimate desire is always to reclaim the Ring.
