Gollum, a tragic figure from J.R.R. Tolkien's Middle-earth legendarium, first appeared in *The Hobbit*. He was originally a Stoor Hobbit named Sméagol.
Driven by greed and a fascination with the One Ring, Sméagol murdered his relative Déagol to possess it. The Ring's corrupting influence twisted him physically and mentally over centuries, transforming him into the creature known as Gollum.
