Biography:
Gollum, also known as Sméagol, is a tragic character from J.R.R. Tolkien's Middle-earth legendarium.
Originally a Stoor Hobbit of the River-folk, Sméagol was corrupted by the One Ring. On Sméagol's birthday in the year TA 2463, his relative Déagol found the Ring in the River Anduin. Sméagol immediately coveted it, murdering Déagol to claim it as his own.
The Ring's corrupting influence twisted Sméagol both physically and mentally. He was driven from his community and retreated into the Misty Mountains, where he lived for centuries, his lifespan unnaturally extended by the Ring.
Gollum first appeared in *The Hobbit* where he was encountered by Bilbo Baggins in the Misty Mountains, who acquired the Ring. Over time, Gollum became consumed by a desire to reclaim "his precious", leading him to play a key role in the events of *The Lord of the Rings*.
