Supergirl, as portrayed in The CW's TV show *Supergirl*, is Kara Zor-El, a Kryptonian refugee who escaped the destruction of her home planet. Sent to Earth to protect her infant cousin Kal-El (Superman), her pod was knocked off course, trapping her in the Phantom Zone for years.

She arrived on Earth much later, finding Kal-El already established as Superman. Taking on the identity of Kara Danvers, she lives a normal life until she is forced to reveal her powers to save her sister, Alex Danvers. She then decides to embrace her destiny as a hero.

Melissa Benoist plays Kara Zor-El/Supergirl in *Supergirl*, which premiered on October 26, 2015, on CBS before moving to The CW.
