Biography:
Supergirl (Matrix) debuted in DC Comics in 1988 during the "Superman" Vol. 2 series. Created by John Byrne, she originated from a pocket universe created by the Time Trapper. Within this universe, Lex Luthor destroyed Krypton, and a dying Superman transferred his lifeforce to a protoplasmic matrix, granting it sentience and powers.
This Matrix initially appeared as a being composed of protoplasm. She possessed powers similar to Superman, including flight, super strength, and heat vision. She could also shapeshift, becoming invisible and intangible.
She eventually made her way to the main DC Universe where she encountered Superman. Initially struggling to control her powers and understand her purpose, she was given the name Supergirl. She struggled with her identity and humanity, even briefly bonding with Lex Luthor to form a romantic relationship.
The Matrix Supergirl eventually merged with a human woman named Linda Danvers, becoming an Earth-born angel and eventually evolving into a more traditional version of Supergirl. Her original protoplasmic form and origins set her apart from other iterations of the character.
