Emperor Palpatine, also known as Darth Sidious, is a central antagonist in the Star Wars saga. His first appearance was in Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back (1980), although he was only shown via hologram.
He is a powerful Sith Lord who manipulates galactic events from behind the scenes. A master of the dark side of the Force, Palpatine orchestrated the Clone Wars to dismantle the Galactic Republic and establish the Galactic Empire, with himself as Emperor.
In Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker, Palpatine returns, revealed to be the source of the dark side's resurgence. He seeks to reclaim his power and establish a new Sith dynasty, ultimately being defeated by Rey Skywalker.
