Benjamin "Ben" Grimm, known as Thing, is a fictional superhero appearing in media adaptations of the Marvel Comics character, most notably in versions of the Fantastic Four. His first appearance in comic books was in The Fantastic Four #1 (November 1961).
In many cinematic and television portrayals, Ben Grimm is often depicted as a loyal and steadfast friend, a skilled pilot, and a former college football star. During an unauthorized mission into space aboard a vessel of Reed Richard's making, he is exposed to cosmic radiation that causes a drastic physical transformation.
This transformation permanently alters Ben into a large, rock-like humanoid with immense strength and durability. While he possesses great power, Ben's transformation is often a source of inner turmoil, as he grapples with his monstrous appearance and the loss of his former life.
