Sun Wukong, also known as the Monkey King, is a prominent character in the classic Chinese novel Journey to the West.
Born from a stone egg atop Flower Fruit Mountain, he quickly distinguishes himself through bravery and intelligence. Seeking immortality, he becomes a disciple of a Taoist sage. He learns magic, combat, and the ability to shapeshift into animals and objects. This training leads to him acquiring many powers.
Growing arrogant, Sun Wukong challenges the authority of the Jade Emperor, declaring himself "Great Sage Equal to Heaven." After wreaking havoc in the Heavenly Realm, he's eventually subdued by Buddha.
As punishment for his rebellious behavior, the Monkey King is imprisoned under a mountain for five hundred years. He is eventually freed by the monk Tang Sanzang, whom he agrees to protect on a pilgrimage to the West to retrieve Buddhist scriptures.
