Biography:
Sméagol, later known as Gollum, is a character from J.R.R. Tolkien's Middle-earth legendarium. He first appears in The Hobbit, but his full backstory is revealed in The Lord of the Rings.
Originally a Stoor Hobbit, Sméagol was drawn to the One Ring, murdering his relative Déagol to obtain it after Déagol found it in the River Anduin. The Ring corrupted him, both physically and mentally. He was banished from his community and retreated into the Misty Mountains.
Over centuries, the Ring extended his life but twisted his body and mind. He became a gaunt, wretched creature, consumed by his obsession with the "precious" Ring. He develops a split personality, with "Sméagol" representing remnants of his former self and "Gollum" reflecting his Ring-addled state.
