Sméagol, corrupted by the One Ring, became the creature known as Gollum. This pitiable character from Middle Earth's history first appeared in *The Hobbit* as a riddle-loving, subterranean dweller. He is a central figure in the narrative, driven by an insatiable hunger for the Ring he calls "my precious."

Once a Stoor Hobbit, Sméagol murdered his relative Déagol to obtain the Ring after Déagol found it in the Gladden Fields. The Ring twisted his body and mind, prolonging his life far beyond its natural span, but also leaving him physically and mentally scarred. He was banished from his community, and fled to the Misty Mountains, where he was slowly consumed by the Ring.

Gollum is a complex character, simultaneously repulsive and sympathetic. He is depicted as wretched, treacherous, and utterly consumed by his desire for the Ring, but also as a victim of its corrupting influence. This duality makes him one of the most memorable and tragic figures in Tolkien's legendarium.
