Hobgoblin is a villainous identity that has been adopted by several characters in Marvel Comics, primarily associated with Spider-Man.
The original Hobgoblin, Roderick Kingsley, debuted in The Amazing Spider-Man #238 (March 1983). Kingsley was a fashion designer who used Narda to gain super strength and create a Goblin-like costume. He then blackmailed criminals into working for him in an effort to become a more successful underworld boss.
Over time, the Hobgoblin mantle was taken up by others, including Jason Macendale and Phil Urich. Each iteration brought their own motivations and interpretations to the role, often becoming entangled in Spider-Man's conflicts and rivalries with other villains.
